Landscape Architecture and Planning

Landscape architecture is the process of designing the shape of the land and the arrangement of trees, shrubs, and other plantings to serve the objectives of the owner and to maximize the beauty of the site.

Our clients at Pinyon Design usually have a number of objectives, including the desire to screen unsightly features of the neighborhood, to create privacy, to complement the appearance of a building, or to conserve water.

Designing in Partnership with Nature
Our philosophy is to serve those objectives while fitting the plan into the context of the setting, using plants that will thrive in the climate and that meet a variety of horticultural concerns. For example, we take care to choose plants that do not conflict with one another biologically. We group plants if they serve one another for purposes of pollination. We like to use flowering trees and shrubs, and wildflowers, that bloom at different times throughout the season, so the landscape is constantly changing. And of course we select plants with an eye to what size they'll attain at full growth. Thus we help you create a more resource efficient or sustainable landscape utilizing permaculture design.

Bio-Regional Approach
As civil and engineering technologies serve to maximize economies in developing urban areas our communities are looking more and more alike. Landscape and weather are two elements that significantly contribute to regionalism: think of great tourist attractions-San Francisco; Hawaii; New Orleans; or Chicago. Climate and plants work together to create unique places. This is especially true where the Sierra Nevada meets the Great Basin! Evoking our natural surroundings by using our native plants and mulching materials will conserve water and to some degree help make our urban areas special.

The result is a Master Plan, showing the existing features of the site as well as the locations of trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers, and the design of the irrigation system. If you would like us to build your project, give us a call at 775 747-2222, or e-mail us.

Or if you would like Tom Stille to create a Master Plan that you can build yourself, give Tom a call at 747-2222, or send him an e-mail.
