Permaculture Design Principle 2

Plant trees that perform multiple functions, chickens provide many benefits, people can provide more than one skill

Each Element Performs Multiple Functions - Multitasking

In a permaculture design, each element has many functions. Having more than one function helps create a stable and diverse system because each element is connected together, making energy cycle through the system rather than being lost as wastes, i.e. food production can be connected to animal husbandry, composting, useful structures etc.; a tree planted to shade a structure for energy efficiency can also produce food for humans or animals, provide bees and birds with forage, provide pleasure in springtime through blossoms, etc.

If you learn to design a web site, care for children, learn how to prune grapes for maximum production, build a greenhouse, etc., you will be more valuable in terms of what you are able to offer others.

  1. Relative Location - Where stuff in the right place
  2. Each Element Performs Multiple Functions - Multitasking
  3. Multiple Sources for Each Need - Redundancy planning to reduce failure
  4. Energy Efficient Planning - Zoning & sectors
  5. Using Local Biological Resources - "Think globally, Act Locally"
  6. Cycling of Energy - Reconnecting movement of energy
  7. Optimum Sizing & Stacking - Intensive systems under control
  8. Accelerating Plant Succession and Evolution- Working with Nature, not against Her
  9. Polyculture and Diversity of Species - Resilience and resistance to pest attacks
  10. Increasing "Edge" Within a System - Increasing productivity through edge effects and natural patterns
