Oxbow Nature Study Area

Note: The Oxbow Nature Study Area suffered major damage in the New Year's Day Flood of 1998. Additionally, the flood rerouted the river and changed the topography and natural habitats. You can now visit again, but be careful while there and follow the directions of the park rangers.

AERIAL VIEW OF OXBOW
The Oxbow Nature Study area is located between Second Street and
the Truckee River in east Reno. This is what the river corridor looked like before the flood.

This shows the new edge for the River.

VISITOR KIOSK
WOODEN WALK
INTERPRETIVE SIGN
OBSERVATION PLATFORM
The Visitor Center serves as an office for park rangers and as an information kiosk for visitors.
Wooden walkways allow visitors to wander through the marshland and wet woodlands, observing nature.
Interpretive signs describe flora and fauna and invite visitors to make specific observations.
The old platform had a wooden gauge reminding visitors of spring floods. It was washed away in the New Year's 1998 flood (see photo below on left).
Looking across the river towards the Visitor Center (on the left) hours before the deck and ramp were on their way to Pyramid Lake. Flood waters rose 4 inches inside the visitor center building.
Come and see the new deck and platforms. Learn more about the flood, riparian areas, and the river channel by reading the new interpretive signs on the deck.
SCHOOL CHILDREN
Tom Stille talks with schoolchildren about the birds and animals
they can see at Oxbow. Field trips to the park are frequent.
